The Wathamstow Wassail 2012

Here are some photos from Saturday's lantern wassail parade.
A frenzy of lantern making was followed by a beautiful night lit parade along Orford rd, to The Village square on Eden rd and ended at Wingfield Park.

2.30pm–3.45pm at The Vestry House Museum. Learn Wassail songs and make lanterns.

4pm–5pm Lantern parade around Walthamstow village, to include Holmcroft House sheltered accommodation the Village Square and wassailing local apple trees. Parade ends at Wingfield Park.

4pm-8pm All assemble at the Nags Head; performances include Collard Court sheltered housing, wassailing an apple tree, and singing whilst walking up to the Folk Club at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Pub, Hoe St (doors open 7.30pm)

Wassailing is a centuries-old British tradition for marking the New
Year, where a group of people walk round their neighbourhood
singing special songs called "wassails". Traditionally, the
wassailing has two strands - going from door to door being welcomed
in local houses, and blessing apple trees and beehives so that they
are fruitful and productive in the coming year. There are old
recipes for wassail drinks to go with these activities, and
descriptions of "wassail cups" which are the vessels out of which
these would have been drunk. These traditions still continue
unbroken in some parts of Britain, such as Cornwall. In other
areas, it has been revived more recently, and it is common for
these celebrations to take place on, or close to, January 17th, the
"old" New Year's Eve.

Based on a series of Dutch children's books by Hans der Beer, the animated feature The Little Polar Bear is a German production made up of three separate stories about polar bear cub Lars.

In the first, Lars meets and befriends a seal named Robby. In the second, he is stranded on an island and makes friends with a hippo, an eagle, and a killer whale. In the third, he and his friends plot to crash a ship that has been stealing all the fish out of the sea.

This film will enthrall young cinema goers with its delightful storyline, beautiful animation and positive environmental message. Youngsters will delight in this magical tale about a group of unlikely friends – a little polar bear, a seal pup, four maniacally depressed lemmings and some gullible seagulls, in the Arctic adventure of a lifetime.

Secret of kells November 5th

The next Kids film club will be screening 'The Secret Of Kells'.
Follow 12-year-old Brendan (voice of Evan McGuire) as he battles Vikings and confronts an ancient serpent god on a mission to locate a legendary crystal and complete the mythical Book of Kells. Brendan lives in a heavily fortified medieval outpost known as the Abbey of Kells, where the ongoing threat of Viking raids causes the peaceful monks to live in a state of constant fear. Along with his uncle, Abbot Cellach, Brendan labors to fortify the abbey walls daily so his people will be protected from invading forces. When the mysterious Brother Aidan arrives at the abbey carrying an unfinished tome filled mystical secrets, Brendan becomes illuminated, and his dormant talents are awakened. The book must be finished, but accomplishing that mission will be no simple task. As the Vikings close in, Brendan ventures into the surrounding forest and prepares to confront his darkest fears. The iron Giant october 1st, Kids film club

Directed by Brad Bird and based on the 1968 Novel by Ted Hughes, the film tells the story of a lonely boy named Hogarth who discovers a giant iron man who fell from space. Hogarth, with the help of a beatnik named Dean, has to stop the U.S. military and a federal agent from finding and destroying the Giant. The film was awarded a BAFTA in 2000 for the best children’s film of the year.

Pirate and under the sea workshops

Here are some photos from this Summer's playscheme at Church Hill nursery July 2011.
First set of photos, are from the Pirates workshop, where swords, boats and pirate hats were made for role play. arghah my hearties!

Second set are from , 'Under the sea', exploring the strange under water world of deep sea fish. Bioluminescence with jelly fish and other deep sea fish. We also sailed in the Yellow submarine, with The Beatles on board!

NIm's Island at Kids film club, 17th September and Art trail thanks

We will be screening Nim's Island this Saturday, doors open at 10 a.m for crafts at The Orford road Social Club.

A young girl living on a tropical island with her scientist father is left to fend for herself after her dad's boat leaves him stranded far away and careless tour companies wreak havoc on the secluded paradise in directors Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett's adaptation of the popular children's book by author Wendy Orr. Realizing that she will need adult assistance if she truly hopes to save her home, the resourceful youngster soon begins exchanging e-mails with the author of a book she has been reading. Nim's Island stars Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin, as well as Jodie Foster and Gerard Butler. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi. Runs for 1 hr. 35 min.

'Our environment' at The Vestry museum 1st floor for the E17 art trail.
Is Our installation inspired by a trip to Springfield Park, where we
collected natural and man made objects.
Displayed as a chest of drawers filled with curiosities. Each drawer can be opened to reveal our finds on our. The artwork is a reflection of the children’s view of their local environment; identifying their favourite
aspects.
This ties in with the work that Church Hill Nursery are doing on
sustainability – how we can look after our environment and ensure that it can be enjoyed by all.

Creating a workshop at a screening of 'Howl's Moving Castle'
September 3rd, at the Orford House Social Club, 73 Orford Rd, E17 9QR.
Craft will start from doors opening at 10 a.m til 10.30 a.m. We will be making Howls last transformation as a bird.

Howls Moving Castle is an acclaimed Japanese animation by Hayao Miyazaki . A stunning fantasy adventure that has wowed children and critics alike. I recommend for children over 6 years.
